A system, whether technical, social or otherwise, earns trust when the people who contribute to creation of its value can reasonably expect to share in its benefits.

If individuals contribute their own skills, understanding or effort and receive no tangible returns, the motivation to contribute diminishes over time. 

Artificial intelligence may have the capacity to be useful as a means to an end, but the utility is only worthwhile for a society capable of upholding a social contract wherein individual responsibility is a defining characteristic and each individual is more or less as aware.
