# FL Studio 21 808 Sidechain Tutorial: Clean, Punchy 808 Sidechain (Kick & Bass Mixing) If your 808s are overpowering your mix or fighting your kick, this FL Studio 21 tutorial breaks down exactly how to fix it using proven 808 sidechain techniques in FL Studio 21. In this guide, we cover proper 808 sidechaining in FL Studio 21, using clean, reliable methods that work across modern electronic genres. This post accompanies the full video tutorial below and expands on the concepts so you can apply them confidently in your own projects. Why 808 Sidechaining Matters
The 808 lives in the same low-frequency space as the kick drum. Without control, this causes:
Muddy low end
Loss of punch and clarity
Inconsistent loudness across systems
Sidechaining allows the kick to cut through without killing the weight of the 808. When done correctly, the mix feels louder, cleaner, and more controlled.
Method 1: Fruity Limiter Sidechaining (Most Flexible)
This is the most common and powerful method in FL Studio 21.
Workflow overview:
- Route your kick to the 808 mixer channel as a sidechain
- Add Fruity Limiter to the 808 channel
- Switch to Compressor mode
- Select the kick as the sidechain input
- Adjust threshold, ratio, attack, and release
This method gives you full control over how much the 808 ducks and how quickly it recovers.
Complexity Crew Tip: Faster attack, shorter release = tighter techno and hard dance results.
Clean low end starts with sound choice and timing, not plugins.
This workflow works for:
- Hard techno
- Gabber
- Hardstyle
- Trap & drill
- House & EDM
If you’re producing in FL Studio 21 and want your low end to translate on club systems and headphones, this tutorial is built for you.
